Idyllic Riding in Southern France

Provence Bike Tour

Perfect Provence Bike Tour

Our Provence cycling tour is the perfect introduction to one of the most iconic areas to ride in France, with a stunning variety of road types and terrain, historic hilltop villages, and of course monumental Mont Ventoux, this tour will tick all the cycling boxes!

We have chosen our accommodations with care and each hotel you stay in offers a unique experience, whether it’s a renovated farmhouse in the heart of the Luberon Valley or a chateau at the foot of Mont Ventoux.

Your HighRoad Provence cycling tour begins in Gordes, a village listed as one of the most beautiful in France. From here we travel north to the valley that is dominated by epic Mont Ventoux.

We spend our last few days here, riding out of two bases of Mazan and Malaucène, so we experience as much as we can of this magic region. Most rides will finish to allow us to have a relaxing late lunch, while others will be on the road. Dinner restaurants have been carefully selected for their variety, local ingredients and atmosphere.

Total Tour Length: 430 km (267 mi)

Total Climbing: 8000 m (26,000 ft)

HighRoad Provence cycling tour is one of our ‘Moderate‘ bike tours. Distances range from 55km to 90km (34 to 56 miles), and apart from epic Mont Ventoux, there are not many long climbs. Riders should be experienced and have good confidence in their fitness and abilities on the bike.

Day to Day

A typical day on your Provence bike tour begins with a healthy buffet breakfast, followed by a ride in this lovely area of southern France. Most rides will end back at your hotel or a local restaurant for a post-effort lunch and we will have a few picnics on the roads as well. You will always have a few hours in the afternoon to relax and explore your surroundings before we meet for a dinner of delicious local fare.

Transfer to Hotel and Shake-out Ride

We will pick you up at Marseille airport (MRS) in the early afternoon and transport you north to our hotel in Gordes, in the heart of Provence. During the afternoon, we’ll do a short ride out of town to ensure that everything is in working order!

In the evening we’ll all settle in to get to know each other better and review the upcoming week over a satisfying welcome dinner at a local restaurant just minutes from your hotel.

Ride: Luberon Villages. Approximately 66 km and 1100 m of ascent

We start our tour with a loop around the beautiful Luberon Valley, visiting gorgeous villages such as Lacoste, Bonnieux and Roussillon. You will also ride over Roman bridge that has been in use for nearly 2000 years.

You will be back with plenty of time to relax in the shade or by the pool before our short trip to dinner.

Gordes to Mazan. Approximately 80 km and 1100 m of ascent

Today we leave the Luberon and climb over the low mountains to the north to Mazan, our 2nd base of the trip. You will do your first proper climb of the tour in the process, along with your first ‘col’ (mountain pass) – the Col de la Liguière. Once we cross these hills we are in Ventoux territory for the rest of our tour!

Dinner is just meters from our hotel, in a 16th century Florentine-style mansion.

Dentelles de Montmirail. Approximately 54 km and 900 m of ascent

This morning we head north to the beautiful Dentelles de Montmirail, a small chain of mountains that borders the Rhone Valley and is filled with vineyards and topped by craggy cliffs.

We drive to a nearby village for dinner tonight.

Vineyard views in Piedmont, italy

Mazan to Malaucène. Approximately 89 km and 1500 m of ascent

On our second transition day, we move from the south to the north side of Mont Ventoux by riding nearly right around the mountain. Enroute we will ride possibly the best 21km stretch of road in France – the Gorges de la Nesque, as well as ride right through the largest lavender fields in the country, around the village of Sault.

We’ll have a picnic lunch on the road. Dinner is just down the road from your hotel in a garden setting.

Ventoux Northcountry . Approximately 64 km and 1000 m of ascent

On today’s ride into the hilly backcountry, you’ll get plenty of views of your objective tomorrow; the Tour de France’s most monumental of climbs – Mont Ventoux. Compared to the more populated south side of the mountain, we will find few villages, but dramatical views and quiet roads.

Dinner tonight is along ‘restaurant row’, just steps from our hotel.

Ventoux Day: Approximately 55 km and 1750 m of climbing

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for! We will start with a 12 km warm-up from our hotel to the cycling mecca of Bédoin, where we begin one of the most epic Tour de France climbs that exists. After summiting we’ll descend back to Malaucène, completing a truly monumental loop.

Our celebratory dinner is at the best restaurant in town.

Transfer to Milan airport

Today we drive you back to Milan for your connection home or your local hotel if you are staying in Italy.

Waving bike tour clients

Your accommodation for your HighRoad Provence bike tour begins with a luxury ‘jas’ (traditional sheep/goat farm) just outside Gordes, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Your 2nd hotel, in Mazan, is a recently-renovated 18th century chateau once owned by the Marquis de Sade. Our last hotel, situated in a village that has become an absolute mecca for cyclists, has lovely grounds and is ideally located for amazing rides around Ventoux.

Jas de Gordes, Gordes

We begin our Provence bike tour at the Jas de Gordes, a traditional Provençal country house on the outskirts of Gordes. Surrounded by lavender, thyme and rosemary and next to old borie (traditional dry stone Provençal outbuilding), you’ll find a heated pool where you can relax after your bike rides.

Chateau de Mazan, Mazan

The Chateau de Mazan’s most famous resident was the Marquis de Sade and his family up until 1850. The rooms are large, modern and bright and the grounds are calm and meticulously maintained. Your chateau is also located in the heart of the village of Mazan, with all commerce just a few minutes walk away.

Domaine des Tilleuls, Malaucène

This former silk farm is situated at the beginning of the northern climb of Mont Ventoux, in the village of Malaucène. Its Medieval town center plays host to a market on Wednesdays, and offers plenty of restaurant choices, not to mention a bike shop or two. Domaine des Tilleuls has welcomed many cycling legends over the years, including Eddy Merckx.

What our Guests have to say about our HighRoad Bike Tours

Do It

Eddie Merckx said, “Don’t buy upgrades; ride up grades.” While that may be good advice when it comes to hardware, I’m here to tell you that John and Gerry’s guiding is an upgrade that will improve your cycling experience so much that it transcends all notions of economy. Hell, forget your cycling experience; this is… Read more “Do It”

Incredible Trip

I want to personally thank you both for an unbelievable, unforgettable, incredible trip. The roads were beyond belief, by far the most entertaining, best riding roads I’ve even done on a bike trip. And the food, the food…. every meal a delight. Even the simple and wonderful pizza al fresco or bistro lunch. Roadside picnics… Read more “Incredible Trip”

One of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever ridden

Having just completed my first (of hopefully many more) tours with Gerry through this region, I can attest to this being hands down the most rewarding and immersive “French” riding experience. This is truly one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever ridden. Only been back for a couple of weeks and already working on… Read more “One of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever ridden”
