HighRoad Swiss Alps

This is a tour that we’ve been dreaming about making for over a decade and it’s all we thought it could have been, and more! Pristine roads, excellent hotels, delicious food and out-of-this-world scenery make HighRoad Switzerland one of our favorite tours.

We have chosen our accommodations with care and each hotel you stay in offers a unique experience, whether it’s a friendly and casual hotel near Lake Geneva or a chalet-themed luxury hotel in the high mountains.

Your HighRoad Switzerland cycling tour begins in Vevey, a small city on the eastern end of Lake Geneva. From here we travel eastwards towards gorgeous Spiez, a small town on a lovely lake, dominated by a fairytale castle.

From your next base in Andermatt, we start hitting the high mountains and some of the most famous and epic rides Switzerland has to offer. Your tour finishes in Locarno in Italian-speaking Switzerland, fittingly on yet another lovely lake (Maggiore).

Total Tour Length: 630 km (391 mi)

Total Climbing: 13,160 m (43,000 ft)

HighRoad Switzerland cycling tour is one of our ‘Hors Catégorie‘ bike tours. Distances and elevation gain are high and consistent over the week, so only experienced and well-trained cyclists should consider this tour.

We will only be offering HighRoad Switzerland as a custom and private tour this year. Contact us if you have a group of 5 or more.

Day to Day

A typical day on your Switzerland bike tour begins with a healthy buffet breakfast, followed by a ride in this beautiful country. Some rides will end back at your hotel or a local restaurant for a post-effort lunch and some will be picnics on the road. You will always have a few hours in the afternoon to relax and explore your surroundings before we meet for a dinner of delicious local fare.

Transfer to Hotel and Shake-out Ride

We will pick you up at Geneva airport (GVA) in the early afternoon and transport you to the other end of Lake Geneva to your hotel. During the afternoon, we’ll do a short ride through UNESCO vineyards to ensure that everything is in working order!

In the evening we’ll all settle in to get to know each other better and review the upcoming week over a satisfying welcome dinner at a local restaurant on the lake.

Ride: Vevey to Spiez. Approximately 100 km and 1800 m of ascent

On our first day we ride from French-speaking to German-speaking Switzerland, up and over green and pastoral Jaunpass. From here you descend all the way to your spa hotel on Lake Thun.

We’ll have plenty of time to relax on the hotel terrace or in the spa before our short walk to dinner down by the lake.

Grosse Scheidegg. Approximately 111 km and 1900 m of ascent

This ride is one of the highlights of HighRoad Switzerland – a climb past the north face of the Eiger to Grosse Scheidegg, a steep but rewarding climb on a car-free road. Today we loop back to the hotel past Interlaken. Warm your phone up for this one…the photos will be amazing!

Dinner is at the hotel tonight.

Spiez to Andermatt. Approximately 108 km and 2600 m of ascent

This morning we make our transition into the heart of the high Alps, to our next base in the ski town of Andermatt. To get there we climb Sustenpass, one of several 2000m+ passes on your Swiss bike tour. The final climb to Andermatt is on the most incredible bike paths you will ever ride on!

We drive into town for dinner tonight.

Furka, Nufenen, Gottardo Loop. Approximately 105 km and 3187 m of ascent

This one is the moment we’ve all been waiting for – one of the most gorgeous mountain loops in Europe. This 100km circuit ticks all the boxes, from riding on the road James Bond had his Goldfinger car chase on, to descending past the Glacial source of the Rhone River, to the incredible cobbled climb of Via Tremola.

We’ll have a picnic lunch on the road. Dinner is at the hotel tonight.

Andermatt to Locarno . Approximately 133 km and 1800m of ascent

Today we descend from the high Alps to the swanky shores of Lago Maggiore, entering Italian-speaking Switzerland in the process. There is climbing, though, with two passes on the route (Oberalp and Lucomagno) before our long descent to the lake district.

Dinner tonight is at our lakefront hotel.

Alpe di Neggia: Approximately 79 km and 1460 m of climbing

On your final ride in Switzerland we start off in the morning with a long and wonderful lakeside pedal, before an equally fun climb of to Alpe di Neggia. Don’t forget your passport, just in case, because we’ll be briefly crossing the border into Italy on our way!

Our celebratory dinner is at Mama Mia, steps from our hotel.

Transfer to Milan airport

Today we drive you to Milan Malpensa airport for your connection home or maybe an onward journey!

Accommodations

Your accommodation for your HighRoad Switzerland bike tour starts with a stylish apart-hotel on a shaded street just steps from Lake Geneva. Sporting a commanding view over Spiez Bay and Lake Thun, our 2nd hotel is perfectly located for our cycling needs. Our 3rd base is a brand new Radisson Blue just outside the lovely ski village of Andermatt. Finally, your last hotel sits on the northern end of Lago Maggiore, on a quiet street. Every room has a lake view.

Base Vevey, Vevey

We begin our Swiss Alps bike tour at Base Vevey, hidden away on a quiet residential street and just minutes from Lake Geneva. We’ll only have one night here, so make sure you make your way to the rooftop for some nice views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Belvedere Strandhotel, Spiez

One of our favorite hotels, the Belvedere sits above lovely Lake Thun, minutes from the center of Spiez and the harbor, where we’ll be having dinner one night. If you are ready to relax after our rides, the hotel has a great spa with a view!

Radisson Blue, Andermatt

A brand new hotel, the Radisson Blue Andermatt is an excellent design hotel located just outside town, offering wonderful views in all directions. Rooms are spacious and stylish.

Hotel and Lounge Lago Maggiore, Locarno

Our final hotel is beautifully situated right on Lago Maggiore, close to the old town of Locarno, but on a quiet, cycling-friendly, street. The spacious lounge and terrace is a perfect place for an après-ride drink!

I want to personally thank you both for an unbelievable, unforgettable, incredible trip. The roads were beyond belief, by far the most entertaining, best riding roads I’ve even done on a bike trip. One of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever ridden

Having just completed my first (of hopefully many more) tours with Gerry through this region, I can attest to this being hands down the most rewarding and immersive “French” riding experience. This is truly one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever ridden. Only been back for a couple of weeks and already working on… Read more “One of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever ridden”
