Provençal Riding at its Best
The first dukedom in France, Uzès is a brimming with history. It is an ancient, lovely hilltop town with shaded squares, winding pedestrian streets and a famous twice-weekly market where you can find fresh produce from the endless fields that surround the town. For the cyclist Uzès is a hard-to-beat base, with excellent riding in all directions. Once you are out of town (very quickly) you are on small, quiet roads that can be flat, rolling or hilly.
Pont du Gard, one of the most astounding Roman Aqueducts in the world (a UNESCO Heritage Site), can easily be accessed by bike on small farmers’ roads. For more of a challenge, the hills of Nimes are just a few kilometers south of town and to the north there are endless kilometers of long empty roads that climb through the garrigue so typical of the Mediterranean. If you want a leg burner we’ll take you to climb Mont Bouquet, our local training mountain, with stretches of 20%!

Day to Day
Your Uzès BreakAway is a custom and private cycling tour perfect for individuals, couples and groups.
You can choose the number of days you’d like to spend cycling in the south of France with us, and we make sure your guided rides are tailored-made to your expectations and abilities. Your BreakAway can be as short as two nights and as long as you’d like to stay.
Below is an example itinerary for a typical 3 day/3 night tour.
Gorges du Gardon
After a nourishing breakfast, our first ride will introduce you to the Gardon river and its gorges. Heading south out of town, our route passes over the Gardon river gorge twice and includes a gentle 6 km climb as well as a thrilling 5 km gorge descent. The caves dotting the gorge walls were home to Neolithic man as early as 5000 BC.
Now that your legs and bike are primed, this morning we’ll head northwest toward the area’s highest point, known as Mont Bouquet, at an elevation of 650 m. You may decide to challenge yourself to the top, a 5.5 km climb with ramps approaching 20%, or just half-way up, depending on your mood. Either way, the views will be magnificent and the cycling unforgettable.
Putting yesterday’s experiment with gravity behind us, today’s brisk-paced cycle through the vineyard plains of the AOP Duché Uzès will be an enjoyable change. Red Syrah and Grenache, and white Viognier and Grenache Blanc vines will escort us all along our final ride. You’ll return to the hotel in time for a quick shower before your check-out and departure.
44|5 partners the Hostellerie Provençale in the Uzès area. It is the perfect place to base yourself for a few days of beautiful riding.
The oldest hotel in Uzès, comfortable and stylish Hostellerie Provençale is housed in a 300 year old building just steps from the medieval center of town. After a morning bike ride you won’t have far to go for a great, nourishing lunch, either – the hotel has a popular restaurant that serves delicious, local fare in a convivial atmosphere.

A Great Combination
I have just returned from a three day bike tour with John and Gerry. It was fabulous! The two of them combine professionalism with friendliness and enthusiasm. It’s a great combination. For a group of “reasonably fit flatlanders” taking on the “Giant of Provence” was a monumental challenge. However, with the help of Gerry and John we achieved everything we had set out to do. A successful week away climbing Ventoux and seeing all that the beautiful Provence countryside had to offer! The 44-5 team were… Read more “Fantastic Experience”
